Andrew Gillum, Florida Democratic gubernatorial nominee, thanked “everyday folks” and billionaires alike on Sunday for political campaign donations. Those billionaires included George Soros and Tom Steyer, Fox News reported.
The Gillum campaign raised $450,000 in April. Most of that money came from Soros in the form of donations to Forward Florida, a political action committee centered on putting Gillum in office.
During the final weeks of primary campaigns, both Soros and Steyer led a group of donors allocating an additional $650,000 towards Forward Florida, Politico reported.
Despite these donations, Gillum denied accusations that only billionaires finance his campaign. He said his campaign donations were mostly from “everyday folks.”
“Our campaign was really propped up by a lot of small contributions, including my mother, who was on auto-deduct of $20 a month into our campaign,” Gillum said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday.
