President Trump has openly shown his support for the Republican candidate, Ron DeSantis, since he first publicly tweeted his support on Dec. 22.
“Congressman Ron DeSantis is a brilliant young leader, Yale and then Harvard Law, who would make a GREAT Governor of Florida. He loves our Country and is a true FIGHTER,” Trump tweeted.
DeSantis is an unexpected winner of the primary election, according to The Guardian, owing a portion of his victory to the endorsement from President Trump. He made his endorsement clear in a tweet he posted on June 22.
“Congressman Ron DeSantis, a top student at Yale and Harvard Law School, is running for Governor of the Great State of Florida. Ron is strong on Borders, tough on Crime & big on Cutting Taxes – Loves our Military & our Vets. He will be a Great Governor & has my full Endorsement,” Trump tweeted.
Andrew Gillum, the Democratic candidate, was also a surprise to many, according to The Guardian, and had the support of Sanders who ran for presidency in 2016.
Trump’s support for the Republican candidate, Ron DeSantis, is expected due to the impact the winner will have for the chosen political party. However Trump is not only voicing his support for DeSantis but also his disapproval of his opponent, as reported in The Guardian on Sept. 2 . Trump made his views clear after the surprise Gillum victory in the primaries.
“a failed socialist mayor … who has allowed crime & many other problems to flourish in his city … is not what Florida wants or needs,” Trump tweeted in regards to the democratic candidate.
Trump also mentioned his disapproval of the Democratic candidate to John Catsimatidis, a New York radio host.
“This Andrew Gillum, he’s on the far-left socialist fringe. He’s a Bernie Sanders, [Alexandria] Ocasio-Cortez type candidate,” Trump said.
