The time has come. On Nov. 6 the results of the Florida Governor’s election were finally going to be released. The St. Johns County Republican Party hosted one of their watch parties at Buffalo Wild Wings. The room was filled with hoots and hollers each time the TV screen switched to Florida’s results. Brendan Klim, a waiter, said “It feels like a game night.” Eagerly awaiting the results was Chris Ellis, a candidate for City of St. Augustine Commissioner Seat 5. Ellis supports Republican candidate Ron DeSantis and shared his thoughts on the election.
Why did you run for commissioner?
I wanted to run initially because of the hurricanes that happened back in 2016 and 2017. I was a part of a large volunteer group that came into the city to help people with their homes. When I spent all those weeks and months volunteering I felt the burn in my belly. It said “Chris you can do more, why not?” So I threw my name on the ballot and here I am.
What will be your thoughts if Andrew Gillum wins the election?
I would just cross my fingers and hope for the best. Hope he does the right thing, the moral thing, the ethical thing and what is best for the state.
How would you describe the atmosphere here at the watch party?
Amazing! We had a really good turnout. I’d say there’s about 70 people here. We have several candidates joining us tonight. There are candidates from the Anastasia Mosquito Control, country commissioners and congressmen.
Do you have any other comments?
Hey this is great, this is what it’s all about. Elections unite the country and pulls us together. It’s awesome, win or lose. It has been one heck of a ride, and I love it. I do have news to let you know, my opponent Nancy Sikes-Kline did win. I’m proud of her and wish her the best of luck. It is what it is, and I’ll be seeing her in a few more years. I’m not done.
